Ms. Deborah Self, Assistant Principal
Mrs. Self graduated from Petersburg High School (VA) and obtained a music scholarship from Norfolk State University, where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public School Music. She also received her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of Phoenix, and additional course work from Old Dominion University and Tidewater Community College.
During her tenure with Norfolk Public Schools, Mrs. Self began her career at Lake Taylor Middle School and received 3 School Bell Awards while serving in the following capacities: Director of Bands, Related Arts Department Chair, and Dean of Students. She also received a grant from the Virginia Department of Education that supported her action research project, “The Plight of and Empowering African American Male Students”. She also served as Dean of Students at Blair Middle School before becoming Assistant Principal at Granby High School.
While at Granby High School, Mrs. Self began the Honorable MENtioned and 1st Ladies programs, which is designed to empower and build the capacity of GHS male and female students. Students of this program have been featured on WTKR (Channel 3) News for its collaboration with the Norfolk Police Department’s T.R.U.E. Youth program.
Mrs. Self is a member of the National Association of Secondary Schools Principals, Virginia Association of Secondary Schools Principals, Norfolk Secondary Principals Association, National Education Association, Virginia Education Association, Education Association of Norfolk, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. A highlight in Mrs. Self’s musical career is that she was a member of the Olympic All-American Marching Band.
Mrs. Self believes that “All students have the capacity and potential to learn. It is incumbent upon educators to tap into their students’ potential that will ultimately allow them to experience the fruits of their labor as students thrive to become life-long learners and positive contributors to society”.
