9-12 Curriculum

Norfolk Public Schools' (NPS) 9-12 English curriculum aligns to and extends the Virginia Standards of Learning through core literacy programs based in evidence based literacy instruction which focuses on communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills that are necessary for success in future postsecondary education and workplace environments.
Virginia Standards of Learning
Ninth Grade Literacy
-
will analyze and interpret the social, commercial, and/or political motives behind media messages
-
use multimodal tools to create presentations both independently and in small groups
-
expand vocabulary using the structural analysis of roots and affixes to understand complex words
-
apply knowledge of literary terms and analyze a variety of genres
-
make inferences and draw conclusions using explicit and implied textual evidence
-
use the recursive writing process while writing in a variety of forms with an emphasis on analysis and persuasion
-
write persuasively and analytically using evidence from credible sources and organizational patterns to effectively match the intended audience and purpose

to have greater control over the conventions of writing

Authentic content engages every student and provides the background knowledge, connections, and vocabulary they need to become active, engaged readers. Newsela complements myPerspectives, allowing teachers to curate text sets aligned to thematic concepts and SOL strands.
Edmentum ExactPath

In Exact Path, students automatically receive a personalized learning path. The direct instruction and activities use a mastery learning approach to adapt to each student's needs and remediate with prerequisite Building Blocks as needed.

Edmentum ExactPath is implemented in the English 9 curriculum to provide additional literacy support to students as they transition from middle school to high school.
