Information Security

  • The security of information stored on the NPS systems is only strong because of the people who use and support the systems. Security breaches occur more often by insiders than outside “hackers.” For that reason, it is important to safeguard your password and to comply with the “acceptable use” regulations which have been publicized this year. NPS also blocks certain Internet sites and prohibits certain topics, e.g., pornography. Individuals who accidentally get to a site that should be blocked, are asked to contact the NPS Help Desk.

Reporting suspicious behavior is everyone’s responsibility. If you think someone is trying to break a password, you might wonder why. Please make it your business to contact an administrator or teacher who can pass the incident to the Information Division. Suspicious behavior, sites that should be blocked, and security concerns should go to the Information Division Help Desk for proper routing. All of us may not be available but the help desk will always be there with the ability to contact us or the designated person directly.

If the security issue is of a sensitive matter, please contact the Information Division directly at 757-628-3450 and ask for the Chief Information Officer or the Network Manager.
