Student Opportunities:
The School of Social Work at Norfolk State University: Students who are interested in Social Work or Human Services are invited to participate in an exciting opportunity hosted by the Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work at Norfolk State University. NSU is launching the Strong Start Scholars Program, a new initiative designed to introduce high school juniors and seniors to the field of social work through immersive, hands-on experiences. This program builds on our successful Strong Summer Camp and includes two new components during the academic year. Strong Foundations Day on Tuesday, November 11th. The Virginia Space Grant Consortium provides FREE NASA-related programs for Virginia's high school students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. The programs have an interactive online STEM learning experience and are highlighted by FREE residential summer academies at NASA.
10th GRADE
Virginia Space Coast Scholars (VSCS) focuses on the current missions flown or managed by NASA Wallops Flight Facility on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. http://vsgc.odu.edu/spacecoast This online course application is OPEN UNTIL OCTOBER 26..
11th AND 12th GRADE
Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars (VASTS) focuses on NASA’s human spaceflight missions and the journey to the Moon and on to Mars. Students learn from NASA experts on how to design space missions! http://vsgc.odu.edu/VASTS Applications are OPEN UNTIL OCTOBER 26
Virginia Earth System Science Scholars (VESSS) focuses on engaging students in real-world investigations of the Earth and its systems using space satellites and the latest research and data from NASA. http://vsgc.odu.edu/VESSS Applications are OPEN UNTIL OCTOBER 26.
Each program also hires a cohort of Master Teachers to grade student work. Teachers, please refer to each program’s website for details on becoming a paid Master Teacher for the upcoming semester! Teachers with advanced degrees in subject matter areas are highly considered! STEM Teachers apply here until October 15: https://spacegrant.net/apps/vsgcmtStudent Advisory Board: Currently recruiting high school students from around Hampton Roads to join WHRO Education’s Student Advisory Board (SAB). As part of the SAB, students will share their ideas about their experiences with online learning. The Digital Learning Department then processes the SAB’s feedback to incorporate student-centric upgrades in the online courses and assets that WHRO’s owner-members use. Engineering Futures Day at UVA: The Society of Women Engineers at UVA invites high school students to apply for their Engineering Futures Day program scheduled for November 9, 2025. This program gives students a comprehensive look at the engineering field and the UVA curriculum, through the lens of female engineers. Check out their flyer!
