EXTENDED ESSAY
This research paper “asks students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the DP subjects they are studying” (IBO). The extended essay process extends over the period of the junior/senior years and the final product is a 4,000 word document. The students begin the process in the junior year by selecting a topic and a research question and by working with a faculty advisor, who will help guide the student in his/her independent research. The process extends into the senior year and ends with a final reflection interview with the advisor.
THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE
This course is a one-credit course extended over the junior and senior years. It is” a flagship element in the Diploma Programme, [that] encourages critical thinking about knowledge itself, to try to help young people make sense of what they encounter.” Students develop “a coherent approach to learning that unifies the academic disciplines. In this course on critical thinking, students inquire into the nature of knowing and deepen their understanding of knowledge as a human construction” (IBO).
CAS
Creativity, activity, service (CAS) is at the heart of the Diploma Programme. It “involves students in a range of activities alongside their academic studies throughout the Diploma Programme. Creativity encourages students to engage in the arts and creative thinking. Action seeks to develop a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Service with the community offers a vehicle for new learning with academic value. The three strands of CAS enhance the students’ personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning and enable journeys of self-discovery” (IBO).
Granby’s CAS program is coordinated by Ms. Judyliz Diaz. She helps the students to choose activities that are meaningful, challenging, and enjoyable. Ms. Diaz and Mr. Dowe oversee the documentation and evidence provided by the students in order to make sure their activities meet the CAS criteria and that the students achieve their learning outcomes.
