Dr. Melanie Patterson, Principal

Dr. Melanie M. Patterson is a dedicated educator with over 20 years of experience in fostering an environment conducive to successful teaching and learning. Formerly serving as a middle school assistant principal with Suffolk Public Schools, Dr. Patterson specializes in building strong relationships, establishing effective routines, and promoting academic rigor in the classroom.

Her teaching experience includes high school English instruction in both Norfolk Public Schools and Suffolk Public Schools. Dr. Patterson holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Secondary Education from Norfolk State University and a Master’s degree in Administration and Supervision (K-12) from Old Dominion University. Additionally, she earned her Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from Virginia Tech.

Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown Jr., Middle Grades Assistant Principal

Dr. Brown, a dedicated educator with over 15 years of experience, works closely with teachers, parents, and the community to ensure academic excellence and the social-emotional well-being of all students.  He is passionate about building strong relationships and promoting a culture of respect and inclusion, while helping students reach their full potential.  His leadership focuses on implementing effective teaching strategies, data-driven decision-making, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.  Dr. Brown is particularly skilled in conflict resolution and restorative practices, and is committed to ensuring that all students have access to a rigorous and inclusive education.    
 
Dr. Brown is a proud product of Norfolk Public Schools, having attended Coleman Place Elementary, Norview Middle School, and graduating from Granby High School in 2004.  Dr. Brown began his teaching career in 2009 as a mathematics teacher at Norview Middle School, where he taught grades 6-8 for nine years. He took on additional leadership roles as the mathematics department chair and school testing chair at Ruffner Middle School.  Dr. Brown joined Lake Taylor School as the middle school assistant principal in 2019.
 
Dr. Brown earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Norfolk State University in 2008, a Master of Education in Mathematics from Cambridge College in 2009,  an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership in 2015 and a Doctor of Education from Regent University in 2025.

Mrs. Brittany Cobbin, Elementary Grades Assistant Principal

Dr. Cobbin is proud to serve as the Assistant Principal of Lake Taylor School, where we are committed to fostering an environment of academic excellence, inclusivity, and growth. With over 12 years of experience in education, Dr. Cobbin has worked in various roles, including first and second grade teacher, Grade Level Chair, Lead Teacher Mentor, PBIS Lead, Girls Track Coach and Dean of Students, and has developed a deep passion for supporting both students and staff to achieve their fullest potential.
 
Dr. Cobbin holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Education degree from Old Dominion University. She holds an Educational Specialist and Doctorate degree in K12 School Leadership from Regent University. 
 
In her role as Assistant Principal, Dr. Cobbin is dedicated to creating a safe, nurturing, and challenging academic environment that ensures every student has the opportunity to succeed. She is particularly passionate about supporting student discipline and promoting teacher professional development.

Mr. Jesse Ellison, Dean of Students

Mr. Ellison is a dedicated educator and visionary leader with over 20 years of experience in the field of education, including four years in leadership roles. He earned his undergraduate degree in Fine Arts from Virginia Wesleyan University, a foundation that fosters his creative approach to education and student engagement. Jesse further pursued a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Hampton University, equipping him with the skills to inspire and guide others in the educational landscape.

Throughout his career, Jesse has served in various school districts, including Virginia Beach City Schools, Suffolk, and Portsmouth. His commitment to preparing students for the future is evident in his passion for building meaningful relationships and making a positive impact within school communities. Jesse believes that education extends beyond academics; it involves nurturing the whole child and fostering an environment where every student feels valued and empowered to thrive.

Outside his professional endeavors, Jesse enjoys traveling, playing golf, and cheering on his favorite baseball teams. He finds joy in exploring new places and cultures, which often enriches his perspective as an educator.

As a proud parent of two children, Brooklyn, age 10, and Ian, age 17, Jesse is deeply invested in fostering a love for learning and exploration within his own family, reinforcing the belief that education is a lifelong journey.

With a steadfast commitment to educational excellence and a heart for service, Jesse Ellison continues to inspire both students and colleagues, shaping the future of education in his community.
