School History
On October 20, 1965, ground was broken for the long-awaited Sewells Point Elementary School to serve the military dependents living in Ben Morrell, a Navy housing complex. The building consisted of twenty-two classrooms and was completely air conditioned. Special features were a sunken courtyard and carpeting in the library and first grade rooms. This carpeting was a first in NPS. The school opened in September 1966. The lunchroom and library finally were finished in November.
In July 1984, construction began on six additional classrooms which were added as an annex to the original structure. This annex now houses our kindergarten classes and an office. Due to our ever-growing population, Sewells Point also has added seven mobile units.
Our school is fully accredited in compliance with the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Standards of Learning and the United States Government’s No Child Left Behind Act. In 2006, our school welcomed two Pre-Kindergarten classes in order to answer a pressing demand to begin educating younger children in preparation for Kindergarten. Presently, Sewells Point has thirty-three Pre-Kindergarten through Fifth Grade classrooms. In addition, our school has Art and Music classrooms as well as a gymnasium, a television studio, two state-of-the art Computer Labs, and a mobile laptop lab.
Students are able to participate in numerous activities that benefit them mentally as well as socially and physically. Included in this category are the Accelerated Reader Program, Breakfast Readers’ Club, What’s Up at Sewells Point (our student-run daily news show), Jump Rope for Heart, Safety Patrol Group, Art Club, Science Fair, First in Math, and Battle of the Books. In addition, our chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society began in 2011.
Sewells Point fortunately has been led by a series of strong and dedicated principals and assistant principals. Principal Janet Finnegan opened the school in 1966 and stayed for two years. She was followed by: Mr. L.Z. Peoples (1968-1973); Mr. L. John LeBlanc (1973-1984); Mr. Charles Stevenson (1984-1993); Mr. Bernard Chapel (1993-1996); Mr. Thomas McAnulty (1996-1998); Ms. Mary Raiss (1998-2005); Ms. Mary B. Wrushen (2005-2021); Dr. Cleveland Walton III (2021-2023). Dr. Lucy Litchmore presently leads our school.
