OUR HISTORY

In 1965, ground was broken for the construction of Willoughby Elementary School (WES). The land was owned by the U.S. Government and was once known as “Monkey Bottom”. Construction was completed in August 1967 serving grade levels first through six. In 1971-1973 two Model City Nursery classes were added and grade levels shifted to grades first through third. In 1979 WES became a "neighborhood school" and housed students from kindergarten to six grade. With Norfolk Public School adoption of the middle school concept in 1986, the sixth grade was moved to the middle school.
WES continued with the "neighborhood school" concept and served grades PK-2 until September 2017, when it was converted into the Willoughby Early Childhood Center. WECC is a Pre- K 3, Pre- K 4 center in which we have general education as well as special education students served in a nurturing setting that meets the needs of our individual students. We pride ourselves in welcoming all and look forward to fostering new partnerships with our community and military neighbors.
