The integration of AI brings both opportunities and challenges. NPS is committed to supporting students, staff, and families in navigating this evolving landscape. By fostering a culture of understanding, resilience, and adaptability, we will empower our community to thrive in an AI-enhanced world, ensuring everyone is prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Together, as architects of our own learning, we are building a foundation for a future where technology amplifies our human potential—guided by empathy, collaboration, and a commitment to inclusive equity.
Expanded Integration with Strategic Goals
AI-Driven Personalized Learning: AI tools like adaptive learning platforms will analyze student performance data to offer tailored learning experiences, ensuring all students achieve mastery of standards. Tools such as AI-powered tutoring systems will provide targeted support in literacy, mathematics, and other key subjects. Students will also use AI tools for problem-solving and collaborative projects, blending AI’s computational abilities with human creativity and ethical decision-making. Predictive analytics powered by AI will help identify students at risk of falling behind academically or socially, allowing for timely, evidence-based interventions that support student development.
Equitable Access to AI Technology: Schools will receive AI tools that cater to diverse learning needs, such as language translation for English learners, text-to-speech applications for students with disabilities, and culturally inclusive educational content. Additionally, AI will be used to analyze resource distribution and highlight inequities, ensuring every school has the tools needed to support students effectively.
AI Training for Educators: A district-wide AI professional development program will prepare educators to integrate AI tools into their teaching. Training will include modules on ethical AI usage, leveraging AI for differentiated instruction, and monitoring and evaluating AI-generated student data. Additionally, Norfolk Public Schools will establish a certification pathway for educators proficient in AI applications, creating a cadre of tech- savvy teachers to lead the initiative.
AI Literacy for Families: Workshops and online resources will equip families with the knowledge to understand AI’s role in education, address concerns about privacy and bias, and support their children's learning. Collaborations with local tech companies, universities, and nonprofits will provide students with access to internships, guest lectures, and real-world AI projects, ensuring hands-on learning opportunities and exposure to cutting-edge technologies.
Ethical and Transparent AI Policies: All AI applications will adhere to strict ethical standards, ensuring transparency in decisions made by AI systems, with clear communication to stakeholders about their role and limitations. Robust protocols, including data encryption and regular audits, will protect student and staff information from breaches, and vendors will be required to comply with stringent district-approved security guidelines.
Expanded Curriculum Applications
- Personalized Learning: AI-powered platforms will offer real-time feedback, scaffolding, and tailored challenges in core subjects like STEM and humanities. Tools will adapt to each student’s pace, helping close learning gaps while supporting advanced learners.
- AI Ethics and Awareness in Curriculum: AI ethics modules will be introduced to teach students:
- The importance of unbiased AI development.
- The implications of AI decisions in society.
- Responsible use of AI tools in academic and personal contexts.
- Capstone Projects: High school students will complete AI-related projects, such as developing simple algorithms, analyzing real-world data with AI tools, or addressing societal issues through human-AI collaboration.
Monitoring Progress with AI
To ensure alignment with district goals, Norfolk Public Schools will:
- Regularly evaluate AI’s impact on academic achievement through metrics such as
SOL performance, engagement, and attendance.
- Use AI dashboards to monitor and address disparities in resource allocation or academic outcomes.
- Collect feedback from students, teachers, and parents to refine AI applications continually.
Long-Term Vision: A Future-Ready District
By implementing these strategies, Norfolk Public Schools will become a leader in AI- enhanced education. Over the next decade, graduates will leave the district equipped not only with AI literacy but also the critical thinking, empathy, and collaborative skills necessary to thrive in a human-machine partnership world.
