Zoom Instructions for Parents/Guardians and Students

  • Before you ZOOM

    1. You will need your computer, Chromebook, tablet, or smartphone. If you will be using a mobile device, download the Zoom Cloud Meetings app (available at the Google Play and App Store.)
    2. You will receive a notification from your teachers with a 9-digit meeting ID and passcode that you can use to join your class -OR- your teacher will provide you with a link to click on to join.

    To Join a ZOOM

    1. Join the meeting by clicking on a Zoom link provided by your teacher. (join.zoom.us)
    2. Follow the prompts to Open Zoom Meeting and run Zoom.
    3. Enter the meeting ID if you are prompted to do so.
    4. Enter your passcode if you are prompted to do so.
    5. If you see a message that states “Please wait for the host to start the meeting” It means your teacher has not started the meeting. Please wait for your teacher.
    6. Click to join with computer audio.
    7. When you were in the meeting, your microphone will be muted, to limit background noise, and the video will be turned on.

    ZOOM Controls

    Using the icons along the bottom of the screen you can:
      •Mute/Unmute your microphone - your teacher may ask you to unmute your microphone during the lesson to respond to a question.
      •Turn on/off your camera - turning your camera on allows your teacher to see you and know you are following along with them.
      •View participant list - this opens a list of all the students logged into the classroom. This also has the option to ‘raise your hand.’ If you click to raise your hand, it will notify your teacher so they can talk to you.
      •Chat - this opens a chat window where the teacher can see any questions you may have and respond to you.
      •Reactions- this opens a menu where you can respond to the teacher with an icon.

Zoom Etiquette

  • What is Zoom etiquette that my child should follow?

    • Students should not share meeting IDs and passwords.
    • Students should join the classroom session from a location with minimal distractions, if possible.
    • Students should join the classroom meeting a few minutes before the session starts to test the audio and video connection to be on time.
    • Students joining a Zoom classroom meeting should use their first name and initial of their last name.
    • Students can unmute their mics when teachers ask to unmute.
    • Students can use the nonverbal feedback icons to communicate.
    • Students should use the chat feature appropriately.
    • Students should actively participate in the teacher’s live, synchronous lessons.
    • Students will continue to follow classroom rules and NPS Student Code of Conduct policies.
