About Us

  • The Norfolk Educational Transition (NET) Academy is a State Operated Program that provides comparable educational services for students who have been court ordered to the Norfolk Juvenile Detention Center. Our program offers all core content area courses, as well as Health and Physical Education, and credit recovery. All of our courses have been approved by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to fulfill graduation requirements for the standard, advanced, and applied studies diploma. In addition, students may also earn verified credits towards graduation when they pass any SOL assessments. The NET Academy teaching staff are all certified teachers in their respective content areas. Our facility follows the pacing guides and curriculum established by Norfolk Public Schools.

In addition to core classes that follow the pacing guides and curriculum, we provide a continuum of course offerings through Gradpoint and many other online programs. As a General Education Development (GED) diploma testing site, we also offer vocational programs and opportunities for our students to earn industry certificates. Qualified students who desire to obtain their GED diploma have the opportunity to enroll in the Individual Student Alternative Education Plan (ISAEP) program. NET Academy offers driver education, coding, CPR courses, as well as postgraduate education. A DMV Testing Center and TCC Placement Testing Center are also available for our students.

The Individual Student Alternative Education Plan (ISAEP) program prepares students at risk of dropping out of public high school to take the GED while developing career and technical education skills. The student must be at least 16 years old, lack credits for graduation, score 130 on all GED Ready subtests, and have their parent’s and home school’s permission.

NET Academy offers a continuum of services for students with disabilities and support for students who may have math and/or reading difficulties. We follow the goals and objectives contained in every child’s IEP. We make sure that every child receives the services they need to be successful while in our program.

The students we serve at NET Academy may fall into four categories: Pre-disposition students (those awaiting trial), the average stay may be 20 to 30 days; Post-Dispositional students (those who have been committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice, but serve their sentence at NJDC), the average stay may be from 4 to 6 months. Re-entry students (those returning from being detained in a Department of Juvenile Justice facility), the average stay may be from 2 to 4 months. Finally, we provide educational services to students waiting to be transported to a Department of Juvenile Corrections facility. The average stay may be from 2 to 4 months.
